Escape to the country..

A weekend away in the country can be the perfect antidote to the winter blues. We were invited to stay at Middlewick in Glastonbury, you may have seen their eden pods on George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces. After a stressful few weeks, escaping to Somerset was exciting, and Middlewick was just what we needed!

Middlewick, Somerset

Middlewick is charming for many reasons. It’s not your average holiday cottages, the cottage we stayed in felt like a home from home. Meadow Barn was the cottage which we stayed in, and I loved the traditional features and open beams.

Interior Features at Middlewick

The decor has been well thought out, with nods to the surrounding countryside in paintings or detail on the cushions. A focus on ensuring the cottage is cosy, with central heating, a woodburning stove and even fabulous wool blankets which hang casually over the sofa.

For much of the year the UK is chilly, even on a warm day a blanket over my legs would enable me to sit comfortably outside on the balcony for a glass of wine in the evening!

Middlewick has a focus on sustainablity. They encourage recycling, even reminding guests with clear signs of where to put each type of waste. If you have a breakfast pack – which I would thoroughly recommend, the products are all locally sourced. The sausages and bacon were from pigs reared at Middlewick, and the eggs were fresh from the farm too! The breakfast pack was heavenly, and I can honestly say I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed cooking and eating breakfast quite so much!

Middlewick Breakfast

Cooking breakfast was a joy in part as the kitchen at Meadow barn is so beautiful. The kitchen worksurfaces are tiled with brilliant blue tiles, contrasting with the bare bricks, wood beams and floorboards. The kitchen was very well equipped, whether you just wanted to cook a simple meal or a three-course dinner. There’s even a dishwasher and washing machine to keep chores simple whilst you’re away. The cleaning products left are all eco products, another fabulous touch.

Meadow Barn was a cosy, well equipped cottage. It’s an upside down cottage, so you get fabulous views of the countryside from the living space. Downstairs are two large bedrooms, one with an en-suite.

There’s also a large family bathroom, with a bath and seperate shower and an abundance of fresh white towels.

Middlewick has the luxury of an indoor pool. It looked wonderfully welcoming, and is kept warm for year round swimming. The boys were a little sad that we didn’t end up swimming, which was my fault as I rather planned too many things to see and do! There’s so much to do in the Somerset area, I think you could spend a couple of weeks and still not see everything you wanted to in the area!

If you want to stay connected, there’s free Wi-Fi for guests, and the mobile signal is good too! I loved being able to switch off, but it was nice knowing we could be contacted! I think the most wonderful thing about Middlewick is that you are getting away from it all, but you’re not isolated. We’re already planning to book a return visit, as I can honestly say we had a wonderful stay. To find out more about Middlewick click here. Look out for my next post on What to Do in Somerset!
