5 Reasons to be Thankful This Winter.

Guest Post

As the weather gets colder and there’s a chill in the air every time you venture outside, it’s that time of year where everyone starts to reflect on the past year and look ahead to the future. It’s the time of year when we spend extra time with our family, friends and loved ones, enjoying one another’s company and taking some time out to relax.

However, it’s also the perfect opportunity to take stock of our lives, where we are currently, what we have achieved, and where we want to be in the future. With the hectic nature of everyday life, running around at work or after our children, the opportunity for personal reflection can be scarce. Despite this, it is important to focus on ourselves every once in a while – reflection can be the key to personal development.

With that in mind, winter is also a great time to think about what you have and what you should be thankful for. As we say goodbye to another year, what better time to feel grateful for everything that is good in your life?

Here are five great reasons to be thankful this winter.

Holiday Season

Jingle bells, jingle bells… the holiday season is a favourite time of year for many, filled with joy, excitement and plenty of treats. In amongst all the gift-giving, decorations and food preparation, it’s also important to remember the real reason for the holiday. Family time is more important than ever in winter, with a much greater significance placed on visiting family members and renewing bonds and ties which may have drifted apart over the course of the year.

New Year, New Start

Where has the time gone? Another year is almost over and the next is dawning on the horizon – a new year full of potential, fresh new opportunities and memories to be made. This time of year is perfect for looking back and reflecting on the past year while also looking ahead to the next, helping you to work on making the new year as good as it can possibly be.

Family Time

Our families have the capacity to influence many areas of our life, as well as providing endless love and affection. From being a shoulder to cry on to that vital support network, families are always there for us. Whether it is parents, siblings and children or close friends and loved ones, each family member is guaranteed to be a valuable addition to your life. While you’re spending time with your family this winter, why not take the opportunity to let them know just how much you appreciate them?

Reflection and Personal Growth

With the shorter days and longer, darker nights comes plenty of time for curling up in front of the fire. Why not make the most of the opportunity and help yourself to grow and develop? For instance, instead of doing endless chores or just chilling out in front of the TV, take the opportunity to make some time for something you really want to do? Whether it is catching up with friends, enjoying a gripping novel or just taking some time to pamper yourself, ‘me’ time is always something to be thankful for.

A Fortunate Position

As the festive season gets underway, it’s important to remember how fortunate we are. At this time of year, the majority of us are surrounded by family, food and gifts, enjoying good company and having a great time. However, even as we are thankful for everything good in our own lives, it is important to remember that we don’t all share the same privileges. Across the world, there are many people who are simply not as fortunate as we are. Winter is a time for generosity and compassion, a time for charity and giving and helping to make the cold winter days that little bit brighter.

Thankfulness and compassion go hand in hand with the season – this winter, take a break from the excitable kids and last-minute gift buying and instead, allow yourself the freedom to relax and count your blessings.
